What Is Smart TV and Why Is It Needed?

Some time ago, TVs supporting the Smart TV function appeared on the market, and many users are wondering - what is it, and do they need it at all? Today we decided to talk about the intricacies of this technology and the opportunities it provides.

Probably, few people can imagine their life without the Internet - because there are so many useful and interesting things - recipes, news, books, magazines, entertainment content - movies, TV shows, concerts, clips, music, and much more. Since smartphones and tablets have become especially popular now, TVs have begun to fade into the background. That is why the manufacturers decided to introduce a new Smart TV technology with a set of Smart TV apps.

What is Smart TV and how does it work

This technology is a set of programs that create a platform for connecting a TV to the Internet via a local Ethernet cable or using Wi-Fi. Thus, the standard set of functions in television has expanded its boundaries almost to infinity - via the Internet, you can broadcast everything on the TV the same as on a computer, even communication on social networks.

There are special set-top boxes, by connecting which, you can add Smart-functions to a regular TV. Or purchase a model with a built-in "smart" block. The main thing in using the technology is the presence of a constant connection to the Internet - either cable or wireless. The set of specific programs and characteristics depends on the operating system used, on the basis of which the equipment works. In our country, there are popular OS: Android, Tizen, WebOS. They differ from each other in interfaces (location of icons on the desktop), speed, number, and type of installed applications.

Such a device is controlled either using two different remote controls (one for the TV, and the second for the set-top box) or with one remote control, in which buttons are added to control smart functionality. Now some manufacturers are releasing applications that, by installing them on a smartphone, can easily turn it into a remote control.

What opportunities does Smart TV provide to the user?

The TV acts as a full-fledged computer, only without a system unit. The following functionality is provided:

  • watching movies, series, programs through online cinemas, and some models have the function of recording programs for offline viewing using a flash drive;
  • communicate in social networks using built-in applications;
  • use the TV as a game console - there is a certain set of recorded games, as well as the ability to install new ones;
  • view the weather, news, shows, and even shop online from the comfort of your couch;
  • create catalogs and photo albums from your photos and videos, and store them in the TV's built-in memory or on connected media; you can also make a screensaver on the desktop of your TV, etc.

Now the possibilities of TVs have become limitless - they may well compete in functionality with computers and laptops since they do not take up much space. And the elegant design of most models will allow them to complement any interior.
